Artist's Biography
Over the years, Ed Michaels has established himself as a strong voice in the field of music education and jazz saxophone. He is well known for his leadership role in directing the annual Lakeland Community College Jazz Festival; the Lakeland Summer Jazz Camp; and Lakeland's all-star high school jazz ensemble, Jazz Impact. Mr. Michaels earned his Bachelor of Science Degree in Music Education from Duquesne University, in his native Pittsburgh, PA.; and a Master of Music Degree from Northwestern University, in Evanston, IL., where he studied saxophone with the legendary Dr. Fred Hemke. Ed learned improvisation with Phil Rizzo, a clinician for the Stan Kenton Jazz Orchestra.

As a tenor saxophonist, Ed is heard regularly performing with the top musicians of Northeast Ohio, among them, some of his former students. He has recorded a CD as leader, entitled Going Beyond on the Nice Jazz Label. His recent performances include such venues as the Lakeland Summer Jazz Camp Concert Series; the Madison Jazz Festival; the Cleveland Museum of Art Summer Concert Series; and the Boston Mills Artsfest. His quartet recently played a year-long engagement at the Century Room of Cleveland's prestigious Ritz-Carlton Hotel; and the Grille Room of downtown Cleveland's Embassy Suites Hotel. His jazz trio appears several times each month at Cleveland's Fat Fish Blue. Whatever the venue, Ed feels a strong commitment to promoting jazz and American music; and this can especially be seen in Ed's love for both teaching and playing.

Mr. Michaels is also a full-time faculty member of the Willoughby-Eastlake School District where he teaches instrumental music, focusing especially on the district's feeder program. Each school year, he enjoys recruiting large numbers of students to the band program, and culminates the year directing his Summer Fun Band Program. Among his latest accomplishments was receiving an honorarium and publication from the Cleveland Rock and Roll Hall of Fame for his music appreciation lesson plan, entitled 'Timbre: Identifying the Tone Color of the Saxophone Using Pop/Rock Music Examples'. Ed has two wonderful sons - George and Matt. He lives in Mentor, Ohio with his wife of 30 years, Mary Kay; and their two Golden Retrievers, Bailey and Patches.
